Wolfsburg fails to Salzburg and Adeyemi

VfL Wolfsburg is in crisis. The 1: 3 in Salzburg is the next low point. VfL has nothing to oppose the swing of Austria’s champions and his striker Karim Adeyemi.

Salzburg – The fans of RB Salzburg celebrated their team around the strong German national player Karim Adeyemi with loud chants, the players of VfL Wolfsburg took heavy steps disappointed towards the guest curve.

With a Champions League evening to forget, the Lower Saxony continued their negative run on Wednesday with the 1: 3 (1: 1) at the young turbo footballers from Salzburg. Led by Adeyemi and double scorer Noah Okafor, the Austrian hosts showed VfL the limits, especially after the break.

“We invited Salzburg specifically in the second half, we didn’t do what we did in the first half. Now we are here with empty hands, ”said Wolfsburg midfielder Maximilian Arnold at the DAZN streaming service and complained about“ cheap goals ”.

Adeyemi hits early

19-year-old Adeyemi brought the RB team of trainer Matthias Jaissle, who was only 33 years old, in the lead in the 3rd minute. Lukas Nmecha – together with Adeyemi, U21 European champion in May and June – equalized for Wolfsburg after a quarter of an hour. But Okafor, who was also only 21, made the decision in front of 29,520 spectators with a double pack (65th / 77th) after corner kicks. “The way we defended the corners was amateurish. We have to turn that off, ”said VfL professional Renato Steffen.

While Salzburg consolidated its top position in Group G with seven points, advancement for the again disappointing Wolfsburg with only two points is becoming an increasingly difficult project. On November 2nd, a win against Austria’s series champions is urgently needed in the next game.

After a very good start to the season, the Lower Saxony have not won seven competitions in a row. In Salzburg there was a lack of penetration at the front without the top striker Wout Weghorst, who was infected with the corona virus. In defense, VfL made several lapses of concentration.

Surprising compensation

That was already evident in the early stages: The Wolfsburg team hadn’t really gotten into the game yet, they were already behind. After a great pass from Salzburg’s Nicolas Seiwald, VfL defender Kevin Mbabu was taken by surprise by Adeyemi. The talent currently being courted by Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund took the ball with them in full swing and gave Wolfsburg goalkeeper Koen Casteels no chance.

The German Bundesliga team was still lucky when Okafor skilfully picked up the ball after another outstanding long pass from Seiwald, but only hit the crossbar of the VfL goal with his shot from seven meters. The Wolfsburg equalizer fell by Nmecha all the more surprising: After a strong corner from Arnold, the Weghorst substitute was right. After that, the guest team got a better grip on the game and opponents. Nmecha (39th) even had the opportunity to take the lead, but was blocked at the last moment.

After the change, the Salzburg team increased the pressure again. Adeyemi (57th) failed with a heel after a corner kick. Eight minutes later, the agile Okafor was more successful. And the Swiss played another twelve minutes later after a corner kick. Afterwards there was nothing to be seen of Wolfsburg.
