Wolfsburg – Coach Tommy Stroot from VfL Wolfsburg worries about the development of the audience in German women’s football before the important Champions League home game against Juventus Turin.
“It’s a huge challenge,” said the 32-year-old. For comparison: the first game last week in Turin (2-2) attracted more than 12,000 spectators to the Juventus Stadium. Only 1500 fans are expected in the fourth of six group games on Thursday evening in Wolfsburg (6.45 p.m. / DAZN). The Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich and 1899 Hoffenheim also have very low attendance figures in an international comparison.
“If we look that 12,000 spectators were at our game in Turin: Then it does something with the players or with potential new players from abroad who are faced with the question: Where do I go?” Said Stroot. “It’s not just us as a club, but the entire DFB who are called upon to develop marketing strategies or event factors. A first step must be made with TV broadcasts to attract spectators to the stadium. ”
The second leg against Juventus will be shown on the DAZN streaming service. After half of the preliminary round, the Wolfsburg women have one point ahead of the Italian champions and two points behind group favorites Chelsea. Right before the two Turin games, VfL won the top Bundesliga games against Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich. “That is the attraction in the Champions League: There are some clubs that can prepare for an opponent for two weeks because they are less challenged in the domestic league,” said Stroot of the Turin women. But he sees the high rhythm of his own team as an advantage.
