Wolfgang Schäuble was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, something only his family and closest friends knew about, his daughter Christine Strobl revealed on Sunday, ahead of the release of his memoir, Memories: My Life in Politics.
“Eight years ago it was already clear that his whole body was full of metastases. Apart from the cancer, we always had difficult health issues that we didn’t know how they would end up.”said the eldest of his four children, ARD program director Christine Strobl, in an interview with Bild newspaper.
Despite his health condition, Wolfgang Schäuble, who died on December 26, 2023, continued to work normally, first as finance minister, then as president of the Bundestag. Even after the defeat of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) in the 2021 elections, he continued to perform his duties as an MP.
According to Mrs Stroble, her father’s disability was “the least of the worst”, with urinary and lung problems and the effects of being bedridden. “He always said that the mind can only think properly if the body is fit and he exercised as much as he could, with swimming, cycling and physiotherapy. He had complete clarity until the last day. No one could tell how sick he was.” Mrs. Stroble noted and, especially on the last day of her father’s life, reported: “When Dad woke up the morning after Christmas, I asked him how he slept. He smiled and said he felt so good that he could definitely solve some world political problems. In the evening, shortly after the newscast began, he fell asleep peacefully».
Speaking about Wolfgang Schäuble’s (641-page) book, excerpts of which have already been released, Christine Strobl says that as she reads, she feels as if she is hearing her father speak. “His confidence and desire to create to the end fascinates me. I really want to keep this memory”.
