Sakhir (dpa) – Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has called for clarity in the interpretation of the rules after the spectacular opening race of Formula 1.
Even if his superstar Lewis Hamilton benefited from it at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Wolff demanded: “We have to be consistent with the announcements that are made.” He was referring to the fact that initially in the race in the Sakhir desert at turn four leaving the route was not sanctioned.
“All of a sudden we heard during the race that it could be seen as an advantage when you take the curve that far and possibly cause a penalty,” explained Wolff. Mercedes then instructed its two drivers accordingly.
In the closing stages, pursuer Max Verstappen left the track in the Red Bull and overtook Hamilton. The 23-year-old Dutchman had to give the 36-year-old Briton the lead again immediately afterwards. “He was just as confused” as the audience, emphasized Wolff. The announcements should be “clear and sacred, and not a Shakespeare novel with interpretive possibilities”.
