Both Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes can make history this season by taking the world title in Formula 1 with the drivers and the constructors respectively. It will be quite a task to achieve that, but there is certainly a chance that at least one of the two cups will be conquered.
It is not often in Formula 1 that a driver wins the world title, but his team does not win the constructors’ cup. It last happened in 2008, when Lewis Hamilton took his first title, but Ferrari took the win in the Constructors’ Championship.
If it is up to Toto Wolff, he would prefer the same scenario to a scenario in which Max Verstappen becomes champion and Mercedes wins the constructors’ title. In conversation with the Daily Mail he admits it frankly when asked.
“Normally I would opt for the constructors’ title, because that gives the whole team, all those 2000 heroes, the recognition they deserve. However, this year is very different,” he explains.
Andrew Shovlin, the Trackside Engineering, made sure with his statements that Wolff would prefer Hamilton’s title over Mercedes. “He told me there aren’t many engineers who can say they worked on Ayrton Senna’s car.”
“If Lewis wins his eighth title, Andrew will like it more that he got to work on his car than he would like to win the constructors’ title. That’s a nice thing to say, I think. We’re a team and it’s would be great if we could be a part of Lewis’ eighth world title, of making history. That would be nice,” said the Austrian.
