On an equal footing, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton go to the last race of the Formula 1 season. Only one driver can be crowned 2021 world champion and Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff naturally hopes that his driver can cash in on the title.
Still, he wouldn’t consider it the end of the world if Verstappen wins. But on a specific condition. Things didn’t always go smoothly in Jeddah, Wolff explains at Sky Sports. “It’s the racing that needs to be looked at. That went hard, very hard. Maybe even too far, while we were a clean want championship.”

Wolff: “Then we are at peace with it”
If the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is raced cleanly and according to the rules, Wolff can live with losing the Drivers’ World Championship. “May the best man win. If that’s Max, then I’m okay with that as long as it’s fair.”
According to Wolff, Verstappen has a small advantage over Hamilton because he has written more victory in 2021. If the two fall outside the points, the Dutchman will win the World Cup. “But I’m not saying that that will have consequences,” he continues. “It’s just important to put on a great race. In the end they are two fantastic drivers.”

“Verstappen and Hamilton both had bad luck”
During the season, both drivers dropped points due to unfortunate circumstances, says Wolff. “Everyone has had a fair amount of bad luck. I mean, Max lost a lot of points. In Silverstone and Hungary he was not to blame.”
“But he was able to bounce back in Spa and during our engine penalties. In the end it goes on until the end. That’s also how the sport should be and feel, it’s very good.”
