Wolf Shot Dead in Wapse: Autopsy Reveals It Was a Young Male

Jul 11, 2023 at 11:00 PMUpdate: 5 hours ago

The wolf shot dead in Wapse in Drenthe on Sunday was a young male. This has emerged from an autopsy on the cadaver.

The autopsy was performed at the Dutch Wildlife Health Center, which is part of Utrecht University.

Where the wolf came from can only be said in a few weeks, when the DNA research on samples from the wolf is ready. That says BIJ12, the agency that handles wolf cases for the provinces.

The wolf was shot after biting a sheep farmer. That happened when the farmer wanted to chase the predator away and was chasing it with a shovel. The wolf could not escape from the fenced pasture.

After the bite, the mayor of Westerveld, of which Wapse is part, decided that the wolf had to be shot. That is allowed if a wolf endangers public safety. Whether this was the case in Wapse remains to be seen from further research.

Animal organizations have filed a report

Animal rights activists have filed a complaint against the council for “murdering a wolf”, as they believe the animal was defending itself and did not attack the farmer at all. Killing a wolf illegally can result in a prison sentence of up to three years.

A research institute of Wageningen University & Research is conducting the DNA test. On the basis of this, it can be determined, among other things, whether the wolf belonged to the pack that is close to Wapse in the Drents-Friese Wold.
