Gelderland transmission
News from the NOS•
A wolf chased a cyclist on the Veluwe, he reports Gelderland transmission. The images that the cyclist himself made of the accident circulated on social media.
It shows that the cyclist is riding a bike path through the forest, after which a wolf appears on the left. The animal appears in the trees and trots behind the cyclist for a while. Try to shake off the wolf with voices and it turns even faster.
According to Gelderland transmission the images were taken on a cycle path next to the Wildbaanweg in the De Hoge Veluwe National Park, near Otterlo. That bike path is popular with visitors to the national park. It is unclear who the author of the video is and when the images were taken.
“The wolf showed possible play behavior”
Wolvenmeldpunt coordinator Glenn Lelieveld confirms to Omroep Gelderland that the animal in the images is indeed a wolf.
According to him, the wolf may exhibit “play behavior” and was likely triggered by the rider’s movement. It is known that wolves can easily run at 40km / h during a real chase, he says, but in the video this is not the case.
At De Hoge Veluwe, wolves have previously been shown to exhibit docile behavior and show themselves close to park visitors, sometimes just a few meters away.
For example, images of a wolf were recently made in the park who passed in front of a family. The province of Gelderland therefore announced that with paintball guns an attempt will be made to discourage this wolf and make him shy again.
It is not clear whether the wolf who ran after the cyclist is also the wolf who passed in front of the family.
