Wolf reporting point has had the busiest weekend ever: wolves spotted in several places

The past New Year’s weekend was the busiest ever in the history of the Wolvenmeldpunt. That reports Welcome Wolf. ‘Havenwolf’ Asterix, among others, covered a considerable distance.

“While wolf Klaas seems to be settling down in the Belgian-Dutch border area around Kalmthout and Essen, the wandering ‘harbour wolf’ Asterix decided on the last day of 2021 that it will never work out between the two,” Welcome Wolf says. The two wolves spent days in each other’s company near each other, but they never became a pair. “They may be of the same sex or there simply wasn’t a match.”

Asterix was filmed in Rijkevorsel on December 31 in the morning, and was also spotted there by several observers in the evening. The ‘haven wolf’ is said to have walked in front of a MUG vehicle during an intervention, among other things. At around 9.20 am on January 1, photos and videos came in from a wolf in Kasterlee. “It seems likely that in Kasterlee it is the wolf of Rijkevorsel, which has covered more than 20 kilometers in that short time,” says Welcome Wolf.

In addition, a wandering wolf was spotted in Sint-Truiden, Nieuwerkerken and Stevoort and Kuringen in Hasselt, which, among other things, crossed the E313. “It is unclear for the time being with which previous observations the Limburg vagrant can be matched. By measuring footprints on fields we could get a first indication, but only DNA on prey – roe deer in this case – can really provide a definitive answer. We will have to wait a few more weeks for that.”
