Wolf killed on A67 near Aalst

A male wolf was killed on Monday on the A67 near Aalst. He is transferred for autopsy to the Dutch Wildlife Health Center (DWHC) of Utrecht University. It is not yet clear whether it concerns the wolf that killed many sheep in the vicinity of the Strabrechtse Heide.

In the past month, sheep were attacked in various places in the area, including Someren, Lierop and Someren-Eind. DNA testing must show whether it is the same animal.

Around midnight, Rijkswaterstaat received a tip that there would be a dead fox along the highway. “When our road inspector went to look, she found a dead wolf,” said the spokeswoman.

Maaginhoud
After the autopsy, Wageningen Environmental Research (WenR) conducts an animal ecological study. Among other things, the age, stomach contents and condition are mapped out, BIJ12 reports that the province provides support in fauna matters.

It has been agreed in the Interprovincial Wolf Plan how wolves should be dealt with and how collisions with wolves should be handled. The investigation is expected to be completed by mid-February.

Protected
It is the seventh time that a wolf has been killed by a car since the predator returned to the Netherlands in 2019. The Mammal Association wants measures to be taken quickly to protect the wolf from traffic. The wolf is a protected animal, so it may not be hunted despite the nuisance for sheep farmers.
