Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Ministry of Health (Ministry of Health) revealed wolbachia technology to reduce the spread of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DBD) has been proven in nine countries.
Head of the Communications and Public Services Bureau, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, said the countries in question were Brazil, Australia, Vietnam, Fiji, Vanuatu, Mexico, Kiribati, New Caledonia and Sri Lanka. Therefore, said Nadia, this technology is also applied in Indonesia.
“Wolbachia technology completes the control strategy whose files have been submitted to the National Strategy (Strannas),” said Nadia in a written statement, Wednesday (15/11).
Nadia revealed that the government is implementing a Wolbachia technology pilot project in Indonesia in five cities.
The five cities are Semarang City, West Jakarta City, Bandung City, Kupang City and Bontang City.
He said this was in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 1341 concerning the Implementation of Wolbachia Pilot Project as a dengue prevention innovation.
He said that the effectiveness of wolbachia had been researched since 2011 by WMP in Yogyakarta with the philanthropic support of the Tahija foundation. The research was carried out through the preparation and release phase of Aedes aegypti with wolbachia on a limited scale (2011-2015).
Nadia explained that Wolbachia can paralyze the dengue virus in the body of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, so that the dengue virus will not be transmitted to the human body.
“If a male Aedes aegypti carrying Wolbachia mates with a female Aedes aegypti, the dengue virus in the female mosquito will be blocked,” he said.
“Apart from that, if a female mosquito that has wolbachia mates with a male mosquito that doesn’t have wolbachia, then all of its eggs will contain wolbachia,” he added.
