REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SLEMAN — Tropmed Talk on Stage held by the UGM Center for Tropical Medicine (PKT) recently raised the theme of Wolbachia. Principal Researcher of the World Mosquito Program (WMP) Yogyakarta, Prof. Dr. Adi Utarini, reiterated the safety of bacteria Wolbachia.
“Wolbachia is a natural bacteria that is present in around 60 percent of the insects around us,” said Adi Utarini.
He also explained the phases the research went through until he succeeded in proving that the mosquito method works.Wolbachia succeeded in reducing 77 percent of dengue cases and 86 percent of the incidence of hospitalization due to dengue infection in the city of Yogyakarta. To get these final results, he and other research teams have carried out various supporting tests both in the laboratory and in the field in a structured and systematic manner.
Another WMP researcher, Eggi Arguni, explained in detail the tasks he and other researchers carried out in the laboratory. One of them is testing the content Wolbachia on captured mosquitoes.
Eggi explained that the captured mosquitoes were checked for Wolbachia content to determine the percentage Wolbachia on the population of Aedes aegypti in the release region. Another test he does is check the antibody content Wolbachia in blood samples from mosquito feeders.
In this test he found no antibodies Wolbachia on the blood samples tested. This proves that Wolbachia in Temples of the Egyptians cannot be transferred to the human body when the mosquito bites. Not only the blood of mosquito feeders, blood samples were also taken from community members living in the release area.
Not only researchers, stakeholders and cadres who have been involved in research were present as resource persons to share their experiences of involvement in research, the results of which are currently being implemented by the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes).
Community figures who have lived side by side with him for 10 years Wolbachia also gave his testimony. “I’ve been living with it for 10 years Wolbachia“Thank God, the transmission of DB (dengue hemorrhagic fever, ed) is no longer there,” said Kronggahan Hamlet, Anto Sudadi.
He said that researchers were intensively providing education about dengue fever and technology Temples of the Egyptians ber-Wolbachia before starting to be released in residents’ homes. Meanwhile, the DBD Program Manager for the Yogyakarta City Health Service (Dinkes), Rubangi, conveyed the decline in dengue cases in Yogyakarta City after the mosquito intervention.Wolbachia which has been carried out since 2016 in the city of Yogyakarta.
“Until October, only 67 cases were recorded,” he said.
This figure is the lowest over the last 10 years, as well as the lowest compared to other districts in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). Apart from the decrease in cases, the Yogyakarta City Health Office also noted a decrease in the need for fogging, which was only carried out 9 times this year. As a result, funds that were originally allocated for fogging can be diverted to treat other diseases.
