Acting (Pj) Buleleng Regent Ketut Lihadnyana emphasized that to date no Wolbachia eggs or mosquitoes have been distributed in Buleleng Regency. Regarding this matter, the Buleleng Regency Government (Pemkab) is waiting for the policy of the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes).
“If there is no official policy from the central government, we don’t want to implement it. Moreover, this concerns human life. Do not play around. “The government must protect its people,” he said when giving a press statement to media crew regarding the wolbachia mosquito method at the Buleleng Regent’s Office, Thursday (16/11).
Lihadnyana explained that the Buleleng Regency Government did not want to accept this program to be implemented. This program has only reached the socialization stage which will be carried out from February 2023. However, in its development, until now there has been no policy, instruction or recommendation from the Indonesian Ministry of Health regarding the application of the Wolbachia method to overcome DB disease which occurs every year. Especially during the transition of seasons.
“What is clear is that so that this does not become a public concern, I will immediately convey the policy adopted to the public that the Buleleng Regency Government does not want to implement the Wolbachia method before there is a policy from the central government. Until now, no Wolbachia eggs or mosquitoes have entered Buleleng Regency,” he explained.
He also instructed all village governments and officers not to implement the Wolbachia mosquito method in Buleleng Regency. This instruction is necessary considering that during the socialization it involved all village heads and health workers. This means that the Buleleng Regency Government has an obligation to protect its people.
“At least we can immediately answer with this press statement the unrest that is growing in society,” said Lihadnyana firmly.
Lihadnyana also does not deny that every year DB cases occur. However, continuous promotive and preventive programs have been carried out in Buleleng, such as the 3M program. After that, periodically and massively optimize jumantik officers and maximize the work of community health centers and health workers.
“This includes building public awareness of the importance of health and maintaining cleanliness,” added the Acting Regent who is also the Head of the Bali Province Personnel and Human Resources Development Agency (BKPSDM).
Meanwhile, Head of the Disease Prevention and Control Division at the Buleleng Health Service (Dinkes) I Gede Artamawan said that during the socialization stage there was no assistance from the Indonesian Ministry of Health. Only parties from the World Mosquito Program (WMP) provide outreach. At that stage, WMP plans to use Buleleng Regency and Denpasar City as pilot models. This plan will also be implemented in 55 villages/sub-districts in Buleleng Regency.
“However, from February 2023 until now there has been no policy or recommendation from the Indonesian Ministry of Health regarding DB management using the Wolbachia method,” he said.
In the period 2020 to 2023 there was a significant decline in DB cases in Buleleng. In 2020 there were 3,502 cases. Then, in 2021 it fell to 1,152 cases. In 2022, it fell again to 865 cases and until October 2023 there were 720 cases.
“Hopefully there will be no additional cases,” concluded Artamawan. (dra)
