Wolbachia Mosquito Innovation: Effective Suppression of Dengue Virus – UGM Researcher

JawaPos.com – Researcher from Gadjad Mada University (UGM) Professor Adi Utarini stated that the Wolbachia mosquito innovation was effective in suppressing the replica of the dengue virus in the body of the Aedes aegypti mosquito when the population reached 60 percent in one area.

“When it reaches 60 percent, it will reproduce naturally,” said Researcher and Professor at the UGM Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Prof. Adi Utarini at the DPR RI Commission IX Working Meeting attended online in Jakarta, Tuesday (28/11) , reported from BETWEEN.

The method applied to release Aedes aegypti mosquitoes with Wolbachia is carried out in stages using a bucket filled with Aedes aegypti mosquito eggs. Then each bucket was placed in each house, a distance of 75 meters from one house to another.

After that, every two weeks the mosquito eggs in the bucket were replaced with water. “Thus, for six months the Aedes Aegypti mosquito carrying Wolbachia will spread in the community,” said Uut, his nickname.

At the same time, researchers distributed 250 mosquito traps in the form of buckets to suck up insects.

“So throughout the city of Yogyakarta we place around 250 traps which we take every week and count them one by one, what insects are caught there. Then how many Aedes aegypti are, this is calculated in this research,” he explained.

Uut explained that if the Wolbachia mosquito population reaches 60 percent, the mosquitoes will breed naturally.

There are three transmissions of Wolbachia in the Aedes aegypti mosquito. First, it occurs when a male mosquito with Wolbachia mates with a female mosquito with Wolbachia so that the egg hatches to produce a Wolbachia mosquito.

Second, male mosquitoes without Wolbachia mate with females with Wolbachia so that egg droplets produce Wolbachia mosquitoes. Third, it occurs when a male mosquito with Wolbachia mates with a female with Wolbachia so that the eggs will not hatch.

Wolbachia is considered capable of stemming the transmission of the dengue virus because it has the ability to compete for food between viruses and bacteria in mosquito cells. With little food that can support the virus, the dengue virus cannot reproduce.

“When it reaches 60 percent, we pull the bucket and stop releasing it,” he said.

One of the advantages of the wolbachia mosquito is when the release is stopped. Uut explained that mosquitoes breed naturally with mosquitoes in nature and continue to replicate in nature.
