WNBA: Australian Sandy Brondello is New York Liberty coach

Sandy Brondello, 53, who is the coach of the Australian national team, has been hired by New York Liberty.

Sandy Brondello led the Phoenix Mercury to the 2021 WNBA Finals, then left the Arizona squad in the offseason. She had a record 150 wins and 108 losses in eight seasons with Phoenix, qualifying for the playoffs each year. Brondello was named WNBA Coach of the Year in 2014. She also played five seasons in the league from 1998 to 2003.

“We are delighted to welcome him to New York as we move forward in our quest to win a WNBA championship,” said Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb.

The Australian coach inherits a roster with many young talents, including Sabrina Ionescu, last season’s rookie of the Year Michaela Onyenwere and Betnijah Laney. Marine Johannes played for Liberty in the summer of 2019.
