Hungarian low-cost carrier WizzAir has announced that it will suspend flights from and to Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, from March 14.
As informs “European Truth”this was reported by the Romanian resource Hotnewsreferring to the company’s press release at the disposal of the editors.
“Wizz Air has closely monitored the security situation in Moldova and has been in constant communication with local and international authorities and agencies to ensure a high level of security. The safety of passengers and crew remains our top priority, and given the latest trends in Moldova and high, although and not immediate, security risks in the country’s airspace, Wizz Air has taken the difficult but responsible decision to suspend all flights to Chisinau from March 14,” the company said in a statement.
The chosen date may be due to the fact that in case of cancellation of flights less than 2 weeks in advance, passengers would be entitled to additional compensation, and not just a refund for the ticket. At the same time, WizzAir will continue to fly to Romanian Iasi, increasing the number of flights from this city. Customers who have tickets from or to Chisinau on dates from March 14 are promised the opportunity to return the money or exchange the ticket.
Moldovan Newsmaker notes that this information was confirmed to them by the Civil Aviation Authority, promising to provide clarifications later.
It should be noted that since the beginning of the full-scale war, Chisinau has become one of the main aviation “hubs” for Ukrainians. During the period of massive Russian missile attacks against the Ukrainian energy infrastructure, Russian missiles repeatedly flew through the airspace of Moldova, and fragments of missiles fell on the border area, but the airlines did not stop flying to Chisinau.
In early February, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian intelligence had intercepted the Kremlin’s plans to take control of Moldova, after which the Ukrainian leader immediately passed all the information to Chisinau.
A few days later, Moldovan President Maia Sandu actually confirmed this at a special briefing, saying that Russia was planning, with the help of opposition protests and with the involvement of people with military training, as well as citizens of Russia, Belarus, Serbia and Montenegro, attacks on government buildings and a change of power in Moldova. Subsequently, Serbian fans were not allowed into Moldova, and then Montenegrin boxers, on February 27 they announced the expulsion two likely saboteurs.
At the same time, amendments to the legislation came into force in Moldova, introducing responsibility for separatism and creating prerequisites for bringing the leaders of the unrecognized Transnistria to justice. Tiraspol called it “an act of aggression.”
At the same time, Russia began to say that Ukraine was allegedly preparing provocations against Pridnestrovie, and that it would consider such an attack an attack on the Russian Federation and ready to defend its “peacekeepers”.
