Wizz Air, one of the largest low-cost carriers in Europe, will now expand its flight connections to Cluj more intensively and add three more German departure airports to its flight program.
In contrast to almost all other airlines, Wizz Air has survived the crisis relatively well. In August, the Hungarian airline was able to increase its fleet, contrary to all other airlines, and massively expanded its route network. It is not without reason that the airline is also seen in the media as “the fastest growing European airline”. After Wizz Air recently opened another airlift between Germany and Kosovo, on which the airline will operate twice a week from the Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden airport to the capital of the Balkan country from December 14th, it is now still pursuing its goal of expanding the route network one step further. Therefore, the range of flights to the Romanian city of Cluj is already being planned to include three more flight routes.

Despite the crisis, three new routes from June
The airline’s route network has expanded significantly in Germany, especially in recent years. This results in a range of many German airports and important hubs that the airline controls. These include Cologne, Dortmund, Frankfurt Hahn, Hamburg, Memmingen, Nuremberg, Friedrichshafen, Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden, Berlin, Hanover, Frankfurt am Main, Bremen, as well as Leipzig. The Hungarian airline currently operates from five German cities such as Dortmund and Frankfurt-Hahn in the second largest Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca. However, the airline currently does not offer any flights to Cluj from Berlin. Wizz Air, which would like to further expand its involvement at important German airports, plans to increase its flight offer again in the long term despite the height of the crisis and wants to operate more frequent routes to the second largest city in the country by June 2021 as fvw.de recently reported.
In this context, the airline intends to fly to Cluj from Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden airport on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from June 1st. The next day there are flights from Hamburg every Wednesday and Sunday. From June 4th, scheduled services from Cologne / Bonn are also planned to run on Mondays and Fridays. Wizz Air operates a modern fleet with around 120 aircraft – exclusively Airbus jets.
Despite the airline’s relatively stable situation, the project is certainly dependent on the course of the crisis. Exploding numbers of infections have only just been announced in the south-eastern European country, which is increasingly burdening and really endangering the country due to the continuous migration of doctors and medical specialists. Two thirds of the capacities of intensive care beds have already been used up and medical equipment in the clinics is becoming increasingly scarce. Romania is therefore still a risk area and warnings continue to be given against unnecessary tourist trips. This is likely to have consequences for the airline’s flight operations, as the booking numbers at Wizz Air are likely to continue to look gloomy. It remains exciting to see whether the airline will expand its route network next year, despite the consequences that could now affect it more!
Conclusion on the new flight routes from Wizz Air
In contrast to almost all other airlines, Wizz Air has so far been able to weather the crisis relatively well. While the airline did not only seem to have survived the first half of the crisis year with flying colors, it was increasingly expanding its fleet and expanding its route network with new connections. As of mid-December, it will open another route between Germany and Kosovo and plan to take up routes from three other German airports to Cluj from June. Other airlines are still a long way from such positive news!
