The Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines from the Airbus A321neo must head to the manufacturer for repair.
Wizz Air has already sent a total of nine Airbus A321neo aircraft to Ostrava. The first plane landed at Mošnov on Friday, the second followed on Sunday. During Monday, another seven planes landed on runway 04/22 of the Ostrava airport. In addition, the number is probably still not final.
The low-cost carrier has proceeded to ground the planes due to problems with the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines. The power units must now be repaired. Assembly work and aircraft parking will be provided by the Ostrava repair shop Job Air Technic. Their boss Vladimír Stulančák confirmed this to Deník Zdopravy.cz.
“Yes, it is true that Wizz Air planes are starting to fly to us due to parking, dismantling of engines and subsequent sending for repairs, which Job Air Technic will no longer do. This is a long-term planned repair of engines of a certain type, where each operator who owns the given engines will be forced to send all their engines for repair within a specified time.” explained Stulančák.
At the Ostrava airport, there are currently aircraft with registrations HA-LZE, HA-LGA, HA-LVB, HA-LZO, HA-LVF, 9H-WAT, HA-LVP, HA-LZN and HA-LVW.
“Our task will be to take care of the stored aircraft during the duration of the repairs. We will then install the repaired engines and the planes will fly away. At the moment, we cannot tell you how long it will take, as it is entirely up to the airline and the engine manufacturer. But it will definitely be months,” added Stulančák.
As the newspaper Zdopravy.cz already reported yesterday, the Ostrava airport is not the only one where Wizz Air parks its planes. A large part of about forty of them is also to head to Bydgoszcz in Poland. Parking at smaller airports will be cheaper for the carrier, as it will not spend as much on parking fees. Ostrava Airport can make a lucrative profit from parking fees. It was similar, for example, during the pandemic. Dozens of machines from various airlines were parked at Mošnov at that time. Maintenance related to grounding was provided by Ostrava aircraft repair shops.
