Witnesses to the tragedy in Bohumín no longer want to live in the house

Some tenants of a house in Bohumín in the Karviná region, where 11 people died in Saturday’s fire, no longer want to return to their apartments. The city will provide them with alternative housing. The house could be connected to water and electricity by Wednesday. However, the complete repair will take several months. The city expects that the damage will reach several million crowns.

Deputy Mayor of Bohumín Igor Bruzl (CSSD) stated that the tenant, who was an eyewitness to the tragedy, no longer wanted to live in the house. “Today we have extraordinarily assigned her an apartment in another house in Bohumín, she is starting to contract services and she will move from this house,” he said. Another family associated with the tragic event will probably want to move. “She will want other housing, but she wants to deal with it next week,” the deputy mayor said.

The house is now partially uninhabitable, however, about a third of the people remained in the apartments. The city therefore wants to connect the house to the network as soon as possible. Some of the tenants are waiting to return just after the electricity is connected.

During today, the supply of drinking water in the house should be completely restored. People will have at least cold water available. “Today, the work of electricity and gas inspection technicians begins, who will go through the individual apartments,” said Bruzl. The city expects that the supply of electricity could be resumed on Wednesday, when the elevator could be put into operation, so that people will have an easier situation when cleaning the affected apartments. With gas, the situation will be more complicated. Remediation work is also beginning in the home today.

According to Deputy Mayor Lumír Macura (ČSSD), the house will be rehabilitated by a company specializing in buildings affected by fire. Insurance technicians will arrive on Wednesday, because it is the property of the city that the house has insured.

Five apartments will be uninhabitable for a long time and will have to be reconstructed. The city will offer people temporary housing. “Only one apartment is destroyed by fire, the other apartments on that floor cannot be identified as burnt out, but of course there is an odor, they are damaged by fumes and they are difficult to live in,” said Bruzl. He added that the lower flats in the places where there were fire were completely shed with water and the damage there was considerable.

The city has set up a crisis center for residents, which is still in operation. Tenants will receive information about material and psychological help.

The employment office is also ready to help people, through which they can reach up to 57,000 crowns per individual apartment for immediate financial assistance. The city council will also address rental discounts on Monday.

The city has so far failed to contact about ten percent of the house’s population. It provides several people from the house with alternative accommodation in a city pension.

A fire on the 11th floor of a panel house in Nerudova Street in the Nový Bohumín area broke out on Saturday shortly before 18:00. Six people, including three children, died in the apartment. The other five perished as they tried to save themselves from the fire by jumping out the window. The man, who allegedly resolved family disputes with an arson attack, was accused by the police of murder and general danger, the court will decide today whether to impose a detention on him.
