According to a witness, police patrols arrested three suspects on Friday night (December 2) as part of a manhunt that immediately began. They are suspected of being the authors of numerous thefts of catalytic converters.
Around 2 in the morning, a resident of Georg-Treber-Strasse noticed that his car had been jacked up, and an unknown man crawled out from under the car. When the witness spoke to him, he immediately fled to a waiting car, which drove off in the direction of Berliner Strasse. He left the jack, tools and freshly cut catalyst at the scene. The witness immediately alerted the police, whereupon patrols were able to locate and stop the described car on Bonner Strasse. The handcuffs of the three prisoners aged 33, 36 and 49 were released. While searching the car, the emergency services found several thousand euros, alleged tools of crime and another severed catalytic converter. Investigators found more tools when they searched two hotel rooms in Hanau where the trio had been staying.
Those arrested were taken to a police holding cell overnight. A criminal complaint was filed against him for suspected group theft. The investigations of the 21/22 Commissariat will have to demonstrate whether they can also be held responsible in other similar cases of the recent past. At the request of the Darmstadt public prosecutor’s office, the three men were brought before a district court judge on Friday, who ordered their pre-trial detention due to the risk of absconding.
