He said during statements to Al-Ikhbariya channel: “The northwestern and southwestern regions of the Kingdom are subject to moderate earthquakes, noting that the highest earthquake recorded in the Gulf of Aqaba was of a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale in 1995.
He added: “Earthquakes are medium, they decrease as we go south, and increase as we go to Turkey and Iran,” continuing: “The Red Sea, there is nothing, but earthquakes increase in the area near the Bab al-Mandab Strait.” Pointing out that earthquakes were monitored in 1942 and in 1982. North Yemen.
He called for the need to take into account the Saudi building code and engineering specifications, especially in the north and southwest of the Kingdom.
And he continued: In the center of the Kingdom in Makkah, Jeddah and Taif, earthquakes are considered medium in magnitude by virtue of their proximity to the faults in the Red Sea, pointing out that Makkah and Jeddah are not subject to earthquakes, but rather aftershocks from earthquakes that occur in the sea itself.
