The Russian supplier has been supplying Dukovany for almost 40 years, since the start of operation of the power plant. However, after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the operator of the power plant, the semi-state CEZ, decided to replace the supplier for security reasons. CEZ spokesman Ladislav Kříž announced this on Wednesday. CEZ did not specify the financial terms of the contract.
Westinghouse, together with the French company Framatome, will also supply nuclear fuel to the power plant in Temelín from next year.
So far it has been said that there is no alternative who could replace the Russian fuel for the Dukovan-type reactors. However, according to ČEZ, Westinghouse has recently accelerated development and, excluding the Russian company TVEL, is the only company that is now able to supply fuel assemblies for Dukovany.
