without nature we have nothing

Science has already demonstrated enough for us to understand that defeating climate change is only possible if we are able to reverse biodiversity loss at the same time. António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations.

The Conference on biodiversityalso known as COP15, has started in Montreal, Canada, where experts and diplomats will set new goals and targets aimed at halting the alarming decline of nature, as a result of human activity.

This meeting is the most important for biodiversity, because it should lead to the adoption of a new one Global picture of biodiversitywhich will guide actions worldwide through 2030 to preserve and protect nature and the essential services it provides to humanity.

The result of these negotiations must be a firm and transformative agreement to stop the biodiversity loss crisis. Science warns that one million species are at risk of extinction and it is estimated that, since 1970, there has been a 69% decrease in the amount of fauna.

the continuous non-compliance with strategies international agreements for the conservation of ecosystems has made this crisis increasingly serious. The stakes in Montreal couldn’t be higher, many important issues will be negotiated.

The draft comprehensive framework for COP 15 consists of three actions to save Biodiversity:

The first involves the implementation of national plans which provide grants and tax exemptions to activities that provide green solutions such as renewable energy, plastic reduction, nature-friendly food production and sustainable resource extraction.

The second refers to private sector which must recognize that profit and environmental protection must go hand in hand, which means a shift in the food and agricultural industries towards sustainable production and natural means of pollination, pest control and fertilization.

The third proposes the financial support to the countries of the southern hemisphere for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

without nature, we are nothing, “humanity’s war against nature is ultimately a war against ourselves”, governments are needed to develop ambitious national action plans that protect and preserve our natural resources and put our planet on the path to recovery; that businesses and investors prioritize protection in their business plans and invest in sustainable production and extraction methods at all links in their supply chains; and a significant increase in climate action.

Is important that we recognize gravity of this ecological crisis and we begin to ask our leaders that biodiversity be a cross-cutting axis to be taken into account in all political and legislative decisions, it is essential that the solutions reached at COP15 involve the whole of society, from the financial sector and businesses to governments, NGOs and civil society.
