Without flying for 21 months, Boeing 737 MAX plane made an emergency landing. What has happened?

The incident occurred on December 22 and, according to Air Canada, shortly after Marana took off in Arizona, the pilots “received an indication of the engine and, according to standard operating procedures for the situation, made the decision to shut down an engine” and deviated from the route envisaged for safe and emergency landing.

“The device was diverted to Tucson [também no Arizona], where it landed normally and still remains “, Air Canada added, without specifying the nature of the problem, which occurred on a non-commercial “positioning flight”.

The crew received an indication of low hydraulic pressure of the left engine and therefore declared emergency Bread Bread – emergency information due to mechanical failure – before diverting the flight, according to the Guardian.

“Modern aircraft are designed to operate with one engine and our crews train for these operations”, explains the company in a statement.

The Canadian Government announced in mid-December that it had validated the modifications made to the design of the Boeing 737 MAX, banned from flying for 21 months, after two accidents that claimed the lives of 346 people.

The plane, purchased by Canadian airlines Air Canada, Westjet and Sunwing, has not yet received authorization to return to commercial flights in Canada.

Now the company and Boeing aircraft will be re-evaluated. However, experts say these engine failures are common and often go unnoticed.

Two disasters in four months

After two serious accidents with Boeing 737 MAX planes, several countries have suspended commercial flights with these aircraft in 2019. But in November of this year, the United States authorized these aircraft to fly again, requiring several modifications to the devices before they are put into service – at the level of software, system and engines -, according to the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA).

But is there a problem with this model airplane? According to experts, the planes do not crash, they are “shot down”. And the two accidents with Boeing planes were no different.

Within four months, two model aircraft were “shot down” by the security system that served to protect them, killing 189 people in the Indonesian sea and 157 in Ethiopia, respectively in October 2018 and March 2019.

A few days after the second plane crashed, all 387 aircraft in operation in 59 countries were banned from flying, making it the longest stoppage in aviation history.

In the first crash with the Lion Air 737 Max, the pilots lost control of the plane because of a software called Mcas – the system prevents the device from increasing the angle or rising further -, eventually failing to hold it up in the air and crash.

According to Reuters, the operator had indications that led to believe that the software could cause problems again, but even so the aircraft stopped operating. It took a second accident, after four months, caused by the same reason, for the Boeing 737 MAX to be suspended from all flights.

The suspension was long and, until now, only Brazil and the USA have authorized the resumption of flights with these aircraft. Last week, the Brazilian company Gol restarted the service on a commercial flight that ran without complications between São Paulo and Porto Alegre.

Boeing is the largest American industrial exporter, employs around 130,000 people and hires thousands of suppliers. The 737, which has been flying since 1968, is the main product and ideal for short and medium distance trips.

The Boeing 737 MAX is actually the best-selling airplane ever.
