Despite the cancellation of the demonstration, several hundred corona deniers gathered in downtown Nuremberg on Sunday afternoon. The demonstrators ignored the city’s ban and the police had to intervene. Counter-demonstrators were also quickly on site. The spontaneous meeting “Pro infection control measures” was approved by the police and assigned to a separate place.
At the main market, where several Corona critics met around 5 p.m., a large number of the police were in action – but the officials did not intervene. The central square has meanwhile been cordoned off for passers-by.
The city had previously limited the demonstration to 200 participants, but was unable to agree on a common concept with the organizers. The authorities therefore banned the rally. Lateral thinking had expected up to 8,000 participants, including well-known faces of the movement such as its founder Michael Ballweg. Too great a risk for the city, which feared that infection control measures could be violated en masse. Police and protesters had previously fought for hours. “Numerous events have been registered,” said Janine Mendel, spokeswoman for the Central Franconian Presidium.
Hard lockdown: These rules have been in effect since Wednesday December 16
At a special meeting of the federal and state governments, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the state leaders decided to go into a hard lockdown from Wednesday, December 16. These rules apply throughout Germany from Wednesday.

All protests were approved by the police as so-called spontaneous demonstrations, explains Mendel from the Central Franconia Presidium. “The requirement was that they last a maximum of an hour and remain stationary.” Anything that would have gone beyond that should have been allowed by the city as part of a special permit. According to the police, several hundred checks were carried out during the gathering. Among other things, 117 violations of the Infection Protection Act were found. Furthermore, criminal proceedings had to be initiated in ten cases.
In the evening, criticism of the behavior of the police broke out. “We ask both the city of Nuremberg, its Lord Mayor König and the Middle Franconia police to adhere to the corona ordinances and implement them,” wrote the left-wing alliance “NoNügida” in a first press release on Sunday. The rally of the measures critics was accompanied, but not dissolved – even though many participants did not wear masks.
“Total failure all along the line”
“With the police we find a total failure across the board,” says the message. “Either the head of operations was not able to assess the situation correctly and to ensure that there were enough emergency services, or the police on the main market simply did not do their job – for which they are paid.”
Complete lockdown? Which shops are open – and which are not
In view of the increasing number of infections, the federal and state governments decided on Sunday to take more drastic measures. Retail is slated to close from December 16 to January 10. Is it going to be a complete lockdown? Almost, as one or the other exception is noted in the draft resolution. We list which stores are open and which have to close.

Criticism was also loud in social networks. A video should show an announcement by the head of operations to the demonstrators – There those responsible rely on cooperation and de-escalation. “You can’t make that up. Absolute fool’s freedom,” writes one user. Another speaks of a “violation of law” that the authorities are said to have committed because they accept an event that is actually forbidden.
“Do you have a dent in the bimmel?”
The Falcons basketball club from Nuremberg also commented that evening. “This is not our # Nürnberg,” wrote the club on Twitter. “We are ashamed of such scenes in the city of human rights and ask: ‘Do you have a dent in the bimmel?'”
The Nuremberg alliance Nazistopp criticized the actions of the police. “What is a ban on demonstrations supposed to mean when the” Corona rebels “can do what they want?”, The activists write in a message. At the White Tower, “Hundreds of them were allowed to sing, dance and whistle until 7:35 pm. This was tolerated by the local police, who were expressly praised by the Corona rebels.”
“Then we will stop in Bavaria”: Söder toying with Corona going it alone
The police expected that there would be isolated protests on Sunday despite the ban. “It was already the case during the day that people we knew from the lateral thinking demonstrators were seen,” says police spokeswoman Mendel. “But that alone is not forbidden.”
In the morning, some Corona critics met on the street of human rights, the place where the originally large-scale protest should have taken place. The participants ran across the Frauentorgraben, a counter-demonstration took place here in parallel. The police said there were hardly any incidents.
