Without covid vaccines, North Korea reports 8 more deaths from ‘fever’

North Korea reported eight new “fever” deaths on Monday, after recently announcing its first cases of the virus. covid-19while mobilizing its military to resolve “drug supply” problems.

Leader Kim Jong Un ordered the military commission to act “to immediately stabilize the supply of medicines in the city of Pyongyang involving the powerful forces of the medical branch of the People’s Army,” the official KCNA agency reported.

The outbreak, which Kim said had caused “great disruption,” affects a country that has no anticovid vaccinesantiviral drugs or the ability to perform mass testing.

According to KCNA, Kim reported that “orders have not been properly filled and medicines have not been supplied to pharmacies” on Sunday during an emergency meeting of the national politburo.

He indicated that the pharmacies did not comply with the order to operate for 24 hours.

State media reported that 50 people have died, 1 million 213 thousand 550 suffer from fever and at least 564 thousand 860 are under medical treatment.

North Korea has maintained a tight lockdown against the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, although experts have said that with the presence of the Omicron variant in the region, it would be a matter of time before covid-19 spreads through the country.
