Eight-year-old Yoana Balabanova from Bulgaria has been suffering from bladder dysfunction since she was born. “Without an operation, she would soon have been dependent on dialysis,” says Primary Josef Oswald, head of the Pediatric Urology Department at the Ordensklinikum Linz. However, an artificial bladder formed from the lining of the small intestine could protect her kidneys from further damage. The procedure on the young patient lasted seven hours.
