Without access to health, more than 50% of the population in five states: Coneval

In five states of the country, more than half of their inhabitants lack health services, determined the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval).

In Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero, Michoacán and Hidalgo, the percentage of the population without access to health services is 66.1, 65.7, 52.7, 51.2 and 50.4 percent, respectively according to the study The right to health for the federal entities of Mexico: compendium of indicators for diagnosis.

In contrast, the states with the greatest health coverage are Baja California, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Colima and Nuevo León, since only 17.3, 19.7, 21.5, 21.9 and 22.8, in each case, lack health services, which is one of the social rights recognized in article 4 of the Mexican Constitution.

The deficiency indicator with state disaggregation records the percentage of people who, based on a series of conditions, have been determined to not have affiliation or the right to receive medical services in any institution.

That is, they do not have access to the Mexican Institute of Social Security, the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (Issste), Pemex, Sedena or Semar, nor to private medical services and non-contributory programs or entities, such as IMSS. Wellbeing or Health Institute for Wellbeing (Insabi).

At the national level, with data from 2022, it was recorded that 50.4 million people stated that they were not affiliated, registered or had the right to receive health services in a public or private institution, which is equivalent to 39.1 percent of the population. The document details that 21 states had an incidence lower than that national average, while the remaining 11 were above that figure.

This result is situated in a particularly adverse scenario in the context of the international health contingency caused by the covid-19 pandemic, especially in the issue of the right to health, Coneval commented in the analysis.

The highest levels of deficiency are concentrated in the southern and central states of the country, which shows the influence of regional factors.

The right to health is a fundamental pillar for achieving a just and equitable society. To achieve its full exercise, effective public policies based on evidence are necessary.said the organization in charge of measuring poverty.
