Free from any contract since his departure from Liverpool last summer, Joël Matip is lowering his flag. At 33, the Cameroon international (27 caps, 1 goal), also spent with Schalke 04 and after his training in Bochum, announced that he was ending his career, eight years after signing for Liverpool.
Undermined by injuries, including a ruptured cruciate ligament in one knee last December, he has built a solid record at Anfield, including the 2019 Champions League, the Club World Cup (2019), the Super Cup. UEFA (2019), the Premier League (2019), the FA Cup (2022) and two English League Cups (2022, 2024).

In a press release, Liverpool also paid tribute to the man who wore the jersey of Reds 201 times: “Matip was a key figure throughout Jürgen Klopp’s reign as manager”underlines the club, recalling its role in the final of the Champions League in 2019, where it delivered “an assist for Divock Origi against Tottenham (2-0)”.
