Withdrawing Troops from Afghanistan is a Mistake, Could Danger Europe

LONDON – Richard Barrons, former head of the Joint Forces Command English, mentions the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan as a “strategic mistake”. He warned that this could harm Europe.

Speaking during an interview with the BBC, the British general said he did not believe that the troop withdrawal was in line with British and European interests. Also read: British Navy: Pirates Have Abandoned Ship Off UAE Coast

“I don’t believe it was in our own interest, in making the decision to leave, we have not only, I think, sold the future of Afghanistan into a very difficult place, we have also sent a very unfortunate message to allies in the Gulf, Africa and Asia, said Barrons.

He said that this troop withdrawal also shows that the West does not have the guts to manage the existing crisis and ensure that if there is a humanitarian crisis, they are not to blame.

“We don’t have the guts to look at these things and it’s better to leave than to make sure that a humanitarian or political crisis doesn’t happen,” he said, as reported by Sputnik on Monday (9/8/2021). Barrons also warned of the possible far-reaching consequences of the withdrawal, with the possibility that terrorists could become Afghanistan’s “laboratory” to launch attacks in Europe and elsewhere in the world.

“We’re going to run the risk of a terrorist entity re-emerging in Afghanistan to bring harm in Europe and elsewhere, so I think this is a very bad strategic outcome,” he said.
