Wedding preparation is a stressful affair for many bridal couples this year. “We were supposed to get married on May 15, but because of all the measures that could not take place”, Mariska tells EditieNL.
A new date is set: October 23. However, the run-up to that is not going smoothly either. “We had to keep reducing the number of guests: to 100, to 50, then even to 30. And a few days before the wedding we heard that all the restaurants were closing. Then we were like, what now?”
Joke
The bridal couple is briefly considering moving the wedding anyway. “But we had already been busy with all the preparations for two years, we could just get married”, says Mariska. “And all the people who are important to us are still in good health and could be there. That’s the most important thing.”

But the planned dinner cannot take place. “Daan jokingly said: we’re just driving the McDrive!” The couple’s wedding planner is so enthusiastic that the joke becomes a serious idea. “She also made us enthusiastic. The McDonald’s was a nice idea after all.”
Big Mac en kipnuggets
The couple’s wedding day begins with a photo shoot. After that, they say yes to each other in Etten-Leur and then they get married in front of the church in St. Willebrord. “We then all drove to McDonald’s in Oud Gastel.” The 28 guests are divided over ten cars. The wedding procession enters the McDrive, with the bridal couple in the front in a Volkswagen van.
“It was extremely busy because it was the autumn break, but our wedding planner Martine made sure that we could all drive one after the other. She paid for everything for us at the second window.”

“Daan had a Big Mac, I had a chicken nuggets menu and the bridesmaid had a Happy Meal,” laughs Mariska. “In the parking lot we put all the cars next to each other, with the windows open, and everyone ate it in their own car. You could still have some contact with each other through the open windows. It was great fun.”
Opening dance
After dinner, the bridal couple brings thank-yous to all the cars and a take-away wedding cake. And another opening dance is performed in the parking lot. “We had to let ourselves be persuaded, but when you start dancing you forget what is going on around you.”

Despite the adjustments, the bridal couple is very happy with how their wedding day went. “Nobody likes to customize their wedding, but you have to make do with what you have,” says Mariska. Daan adds: “You have to look at the possibilities and not the obstacles. And how often do you see someone in a wedding dress at McDonald’s?”
Daan and Mariska receive a lot of enthusiastic reactions to the action. “They really liked it at McDonald’s and the guests were also very enthusiastic.” They look back on the day with a good feeling. “All in all, we just enjoyed it.”
