From Kiev to Kherson – by train. After the liberation of the city, rail traffic from the capital was restored. The train carriage was painted by Ukrainian artists and tickets were sold as part of a charity project.
Train director Dmitriy Yerushenok says, “Before we had trains Kyiv-Mykolaiv and Kyiv-Kherson every day. even in the city of Kherson, recently liberated by the Ukrainian army and the Ukrainian people, both with their own strength and determination, and with the help that everyone has provided – Latvia, Lithuania, the European Union helps a lot, and America .”
The train can carry about two hundred passengers to its destination and will go from Kiev to Kherson on even dates and from Kherson to Kyiv on odd dates.
Train passenger Taras Lazer says: “I was born and raised in the Kherson region. The village where I grew up and where I planted hundreds of trees was occupied. And now this place has been vacated. This will be the hundredth time in my life I’m going there. I live permanently in Kiev, but I visit my parents regularly. And this trip for the first time brought me so much joy, because for the first time in a year I’m going back home”.
Singer Oleg Skripka emphasizes: “The first people are returning to Kherson. This is very important. I am happy that Ukrainian Railways is organizing such a train. Glory to our soldiers who liberated Kherson, and this is not only a victory for the Ukrainians, but a victory for the whole free world”.
Before the train left Kiev, a concert was held at the festive ceremony. The event was also attended by Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission.
After an 11-hour journey and an hour late, the train, the first in nine months, arrived in Kherson. As the Ukrainians themselves call it – the victory train. A small crowd watched the train roll into the station from the bridge, waving flags, while relatives waited on the platform with flowers.
When Russian soldiers withdrew from Kherson, they left behind a city with a devastated infrastructure: no water, electricity, transport or communications. Re-establishing the link with Kherson was difficult, as Russian forces had extensively mined the tracks. Due to mining activities, at least nine railway workers have been injured in explosions in recent days.
