The number of people infected with Covid-19 in Latvia continues to decline slowly. The incidence has decreased by 16.8% and an average of 593 new infections per day have been detected. Last week, the number of tests performed increased to a total of 90,921, but the average proportion of positive tests is 3.8% (seven days ago – a total of 81,179 tests, the proportion of positive tests 5.1%). The dynamics of the number of tests performed during the week has increased by 12.1%, performing an average of 12,989 tests per day. A total of 3,450 new cases of Covid-19 infection were recorded last week.
In all regions of Latvia and in all age groups there is a decrease in morbidity, including among children.
Epidemiologists calculated Covid-19 infections reproductive factor (R) Latvia currently has 0,90, which means that less than 100 other people are infected per 100 patients.
However, assessing the situation as a whole and monitoring the discovery and spread of new strains of Covid-19 in Latvia, it can be seen that the epidemiological situation does not allow hasty decisions to be made. The reduction in morbidity is the result of previously introduced epidemiological precautionary measures, while the increase in the prevalence of new virus strains and the reduction in precautionary measures may lead to a rapid increase in morbidity.
Assessing the situation in the neighboring countries, the incidence in Estonia is very high and reaches one of the leading positions in Europe. In at least 18 European countries, the incidence is rising, while on average in 10 countries it is stable, especially in Ireland, Spain, the United Kingdom and Portugal, where the incidence is declining due to the strict safety measures in place. Meanwhile, the incidence is rising in Malta, Cyprus, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Croatia.
The recommendations of the SPKC in connection with travel remain unchanged – we urge you to carefully assess all risks and not go outside Latvia on insignificant trips. We draw attention to the fact that visiting other countries is considered to be a risk factor, because in some countries not only an increase in the incidence is observed, but also other types of Covid-19 virus that are not yet registered in Latvia.
