With the quarantine list eliminated, the new test policy to enter New York goes into effect – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – Travelers entering New York will need to provide a negative coronavirus test prior to entering the state starting Wednesday if they wish to avoid a mandatory two-week quarantine. They will also need to be tested four days after arrival.

Otherwise, they will have to complete the 14-day quarantine. The new, comprehensive testing policy, which was announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo over the weekend, replaces the previous quarantine list, which applied to 41 states as of its last update.

More states, including New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and, more recently, New York itself, met the inclusion criteria.

As outlined by the governor, there are two classifications of travelers entering New York: residents who traveled out of state for less than 24 hours, and everyone else. Both types of travelers entering New York must now be quarantined for at least a 3-day period before taking a coronavirus test. As long as the test is negative, says the governor, the quarantine period may end.

New Yorkers returning from a trip of less than 24 hours out of state do not need to take a test before returning, but must still take a test after re-entry. Everyone else, in the general categorization, must take a test within three days of traveling to New York by any means of transit, Cuomo said.

The most recent trial mandate for people entering the state does not apply to the neighbors of New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts due to regional proximity. While acknowledging the growing positivity of the virus in nearby states, Cuomo said there are too many daily trips across their borders to regulate.

“It would disrupt everything if I quarantined those states,” he added.

Cuomo continues to urge New Yorkers, to the extent possible, to avoid nonessential travel between those nearby states as long as they comply with the quarantine measure. Governors Phil Murphy and Ned Lamont have sent similar requests to the people of New Jersey and Connecticut in recent weeks.

The latest developments come amid the surge in cases in the United States, which has left no state untouched. New York City, the former epicenter of the national crisis, has seen its daily case averages rise substantially in recent weeks. On Tuesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio reported the highest daily average of new cases in months (605).

Anyone who chooses not to take a test must complete a 14-day quarantine period.

For travelers who have been in another state for more than 24 hours:

o Travelers must obtain proof within three days of leaving that state.
o The traveler must, upon arrival in New York, be quarantined for three days.
o On day 4 of their quarantine, the traveler must obtain another COVID-19 test. If both tests are negative, the traveler can be released from quarantine before receiving the second negative diagnostic test.

For travelers who have been in another state for less than 24 hours:

o The traveler does not need proof prior to departure from the out of state and does not need to be quarantined upon arrival in New York State.
o However, the traveler must complete the traveler information form upon entering New York State and taking a coronavirus diagnostic test 4 days after arrival in New York.
