Under the new EFB system, each Wizz Air pilot will receive an “iPad.” The devices will be equipped with the appropriate documentation, mapping, and performance apps needed to prepare for the flight, providing real-time information and changes to mission instructions during the flight.
The switch to the new EFB will also have a positive impact on Wizz Air’s wider efforts to reduce its environmental impact, in line with its goal of further reducing carbon emissions. The new system will not only save about six million sheets of paper a year, which is equivalent to conserving more than six hundred trees, but will also reduce fuel consumption through more accurate flight planning and weight reduction.
The availability of recalculated flight plans before each flight and in-flight optimization will save more than 4,500 tonnes of fuel per year, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by well over 14,000 tonnes. This mass corresponds to 180 thousand eighty kilograms per year, which is equal to the mass of 750 full 239-seat A321neo aircraft.
The airline will conduct e-learning for pilots to ensure a smooth transition to the new system. It is planned to complete the implementation and get rid of all paperwork in the cockpits by the end of this year.
Gerben Bonts, the pilot of the training flight and the architect of the EFB solution, said: “WIZZ is striving to become the greenest favorite airline and is working hard to continuously reduce its environmental impact. The introduction of this new EFB is an important step in reducing carbon emissions, as paperless cockpits mean much less printing, which in turn will reduce weight, fuel consumption and emissions. In addition, the lower cost of using EFB supports Wizz Air’s promise to offer the cheapest tickets in the industry and is another example of our optimization efforts. ”
