Jerusalem. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed this Saturday that Israel had “settled” its accounts with the head of the Lebanese Islamist organization Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, killed the day before in an Israeli bombing on the outskirts of Beirut.
“We settle our accounts with the person responsible for the murder of countless Israelis and many citizens of other countries, including hundreds of Americans and dozens of French,” Netanyahu said in his first statement since Nasrallah’s death.
Russia “strongly condemns” Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah chief
Russia, an ally of Iran, condemned this Saturday the assassination of the leader of the pro-Iranian Islamist movement Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, in an Israeli bombing near Beirut, and urged Israel to cease its military operations in Lebanon.
“We strongly condemn the latest political assassination carried out by Israel” and “once again we strongly urge Israel to immediately cease its military actions” in Lebanon, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Moscow blames Israel for “total responsibility” for the “dramatic” consequences that the assassination of Nasrallah could cause in the region.
At the UN in New York, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he was “particularly concerned” about the resurgence of political assassinations, including that of Nasrallah.
“My perception is that there are those who seek to provoke Iran, to then provoke the United States and then unleash an all-out war in the entire region,” he said at a press conference.
