With the DS220j, Synology updates its entry-level 2-bay NAS

More than two years after the launch of the DS218j, Synology is finally renewing its entry-level 2-bay NAS. On the form, no change, the new DS220j is identical to its predecessor: it is a gray and white box, 165 x 100 x 225.5 mm for 0.88 kg, equipped with four diodes on the front and a large opening at the back for the fan.

It is in terms of technical specifications that there is a change. The 32-bit dual-core 1.3 GHz processor is replaced by a more powerful 64-bit quad-core 1.4 GHz (Realtek RTD1296, the same one used by the DS218play). The amount of RAM remains fixed at 512 MB, but we go from DDR3 to DDR4. Power consumption is reduced: 12.46 W in use and 5.06 W in hibernation against 17.48 and 7.03 W on the old model. It has two USB 3.0 ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port and a Kensington security slot.

This NAS of course runs on the very complete DiskStation Manager, which includes file sharing, backup (Time Machine compatible), synchronization or multimedia management functions. The DS220j is already for sale at 170 €.
