A Canalys has recently published research for the first quarter of this year looking at the European smartphone market. According to experts, the segment is declining on the old continent, the possible reasons for this have been explained, and a list of the largest manufacturers has been published.
The European smartphone market declined 10 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2022. Samsung continues to lead the market, followed by Apple and Xiaomi. A total of 41.7 million smartphones were found in the period under review, a pretty big 10 percent drop from 46.4 million handsets last year.
So Samsung was at the forefront, but their performance also declined, selling 16.1 million smartphones last year, but now only 14.6 million. Apple sold 8.9 million and Xiaomi 8.2 million of their mobiles.
Samsung saw a 9 percent decline year-over-year, but they can still claim 35 percent of the segment. Apple owned 21 percent of the market and Xiaomi 20 percent during the period under review.
Samsung owes its large share mainly to its low- and mid-range handsets, with the iPhone 13 being the cornerstone of success for Apple and Xiaomi benefiting the most from the release of the Redmi Note 11 series. It’s also worth mentioning that Samsung’s parts supply network has also begun to get back to the old rut, and since they’re not manufactured in China, they won’t be affected by the coronavirus conditions there either. However, there are effects that they are not exempt from either.
According to market researchers, the decline in the first quarter was mainly due to lower demand in Ukraine and Russia, with sales declining by 51 percent and the latter by 31 percent. Due to the war situation, it is understandable that people are buying fewer smartphones, but outside the affected regions, there is less of a decline in demand in Europe.
Nevertheless, there is a general decline in consumer sentiment in Europe, precisely because of recent events and the record inflation they have caused. Analysts say the next few quarters will be just really critical for the European smartphone market.
