Good news for contemporary art lovers! A new exhibition space “Small Hall” opens its doors in a completely quiet and without opening fanfare in the quarter of Tallinas Street. It is revealed with the first exposition of the exhibition cycle “Artifact Constructions”, which features the works created by the artist Miķelis Mūrnieks and the study of the concept of beauty.
Last summer, the cultural place “You already know where” living in the yard of Tallinas Street presented itself as an active visual art stage. Now creators, curators and admirers of contemporary art have come to even wider spaces here. It is planned that this art will have a long-term home, and it will most likely be called the “Small Hall” art space in the future.
“After last year, we realized that we wanted to expand, and we had the opportunity to use the hall next to the main hall, this Small Hall, which is 250 m2, seemed very suitable. And we are still working with young artists and we want to give them a chance to show themselves, ”explains artist Rudolf Stammer.
At the same time, the new art space and exhibition cycle “Artifact Constructions” will be opened tomorrow by the artist Miķelis Mūrnieks’ games and experiments with materials that have resulted in nudes. In addition, the layout of the exhibition can be perceived as a single organism – all the works are kept in balance by the stone in the center.
The artist Miķelis Mūrnieks says: “Polyurethane foam and latex have been used in these works, and that foam resembled very bodily parts by blowing, and then I just started to create a kind of part-time sculpting process. I began to study beauty and ugliness in general, and how sculpture has defined the canons of beauty over time, and I also look at nudity in art, which has gone through time and act as a separate genre. ”
As the curator of the exhibition wrote in the press materials, the thematic guideline of “Artifact Construction” was chosen with reference to changes on a global scale, which require restructuring existing thinking patterns and setting new future landmarks. The cycle of exhibitions in the “Artifact Constructions” cultural space will take place until July 24, and every week and a half new artists will replace each other.
Curator Tīna Pētersone reveals: “Paul Mūrnieks will be followed by Paul Rietums, who is an architect, but he is also trying to express himself in an art format that will also have spatial, inflatable constructions. Then there will be Reinis Lodziņš, he will fill the room with sound, and finally there will be Alise Sondore and she will have a large-format installation. ”
Two more exhibition cycles are planned until the end of this year. And in addition to preparing the exhibition, the artists have the task of creating an artifact – an exhibition souvenir – a smaller version of the work of art. Thus, in these epidemiological conditions, the space will function as an art shop and at the same time will be able to accommodate 8 visitors indoors.
