Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke this Thursday about being President of Portugal, in Mozambique, at a reception to the Portuguese community in the city of Beira, and said that despite being “hard work is not difficult”, praising the Portuguese population.
“With such a people it is not difficult to be President of the Republic of Portugal. It is laborious, but it is not difficult,” said Marcelo. “I haven’t found another people like us yet,” he said. “We are good, very good. We are the best of the best. Sometimes they get annoyed when I say that there in Portugal, because there are people who cultivate ‘national pessimism’, a characteristic of ours for a long time,” he said.
Although this characteristic exists among the Portuguese, Marcelo stresses that it is “in certain narrower circles than in the people” – that if it were “would not have done what it did for the world,” he concluded.
