With patience & spit: Hundreds of air travelers have already been tested

Six new infections were tested at the airports in Leipzig and Dresden over the weekend.

Leipzig / Dresden – Walk in to the Corona-Check. Official test centers have been opened at the airports in Dresden and Leipzig, offering free swabs to those returning to travel.

No prick, no bitter medicine, just “Please say aaah for a moment”. The test rooms behind the arrival area were already routine after two days. “However, we are still looking for staff and would be especially happy about medical students,” says Klaus Heckemann (64) from the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Saxony.

According to airport boss Götz Ahmelmann (49), the facilities are always active during flight operations. At the moment, only air travelers are entitled to test. For those returning abroad by train or car, test options are still being developed, according to State Secretary Uwe Gaul (57).

The airport tests are just a matter of minutes: fill out the form, show your passport / ID, take a swab; then off to the laboratory.

In Leipzig two laboratories are commissioned with the analysis, one in Dresden manages it.

It will take some time until the results of Monday’s rehearsals are available. At least the first figures are available for the weekend: 1,100 travelers were tested at both airports (Dresden 500, Leipzig 600). Result: a family with three infected people. Yesterday afternoon, the Ministry of Health reported three more “positive” Corona results.

Very soon, the test results can be displayed almost in real time: Professor Gianaurelio Cuniberti from the TU Dresden will soon be able to detect coronaviruses with a sensor within minutes.

For this, the finance committee of the state parliament has now loosened 410,000 euros. And another good news from Dresden: The airport has been connected to the Netherlands again since Monday. KLM flies the route to Amsterdam-Schiphol five times a week.

Six weekly connections are planned from September and daily from October.
