In California, Meta unveiled its first holographic smart glasses during the company’s major annual conference. Their new feature: 3D projections that appear on the lenses. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that this technology will replace smartphones.
It’s a prototype that brings together all the tools of a smartphone on the tip of your nose. The design is simple: a thick black frame equipped with a camera, headphones and AI assistance and transparent lenses that serve as a screen.
With Orion, Mark Zuckerberg literally wants to put stars in our eyes. This screen will be different from any other you have used. “, warns the boss of Meta. ” Because it’s not a screen: it’s a completely innovative display system, with these tiny projectors in the arms of the glasses that project light into the lenses. ” says Mark Zuckerberg.
This is not virtual reality, but augmented reality. The commands are made orally or with hand gestures. A project that Meta has been working on for about 10 years to make wireless, lightweight glasses (less than 100 grams), capable of projecting images that are sharp, bright and large enough to adapt to all uses and environments, without preventing visual contact with people physically present.
Orion is still just a prototype. Before marketing it, Meta wants to refine the quality of the images, improve the look of the glasses and above all: reduce production costs to make them affordable.
