The number of variants of engines offered for passenger cars on the Czech market has decreased by 18 percent in the last three years. The number of diesel engines fell by 46 percent, gasoline by 22 percent and the number of CNG (compressed natural gas) units decreased by 20 percent. In contrast, electric motors saw a 60 percent increase in variants and hybrid units expanded 243 percent.

This follows from the analysis of the consulting company EY, which summarizes the development on the Czech market for the period from April 2018 to June 2021.

“One of the major trends today can be considered the shift of traditional car manufacturers from diesel vehicles. These are to some extent replaced by electric and hybrid vehicles. However, major market shifts are currently tied mainly by the relatively limited market offer of cars with alternative drives and their higher price, “said Petr Knap, EY’s leading partner for the automotive sector.
–
In the segment of mini cars, a shift of a significant part of the offered vehicles to purely battery cars was evident, which thus largely replaced the existing petrol units. Diesel has completely disappeared from the offer of some cars.
–
A similar trend can be observed for small cars, where up to a 75 percent decline in the supply of diesel engines is to some extent offset by a 200 percent increase in the supply of hybrid vehicles, which relativizes their very limited supply in the car unit, EY said.
–
In the lower middle class, the supply of conventional drives fell by 57 percent. On the contrary, the number of plug-in variants of hybrid drives increased by 200 percent and hybrid up to 9000 percent. However, the offer on the Czech market is limited and includes only low dozens of such motorizations. The growth in the number of plug-in hybrid engines is also evident in the middle class, where their numbers increased by 100 percent, in the higher middle by 400 percent.
–
For the increasingly popular SUVs, the total number of conventional units offered fell by seven percent. Due to the efforts of carmakers to reduce the values of produced emissions, the offer of plug-in (500 percent) and hybrid (267 percent) motorizations is expanding.
–
“The general trend is to reduce volumes, yet during the period under review we witnessed growth in several mainstream motorizations, not only in the case of large automotive concerns. It was by far the most striking in the case of plug-in hybrids, where it was up to 33 percent. A slight increase can be confirmed for the smallest petrol and diesel engines. This is a relatively surprising conclusion, because according to the already mentioned trend, the trajectory should be rather reversed, “Knap said.

The supply of equipment levels on the Czech market generally fell by about four percent to 182. The number of variants offered has now stabilized at 743, which is a 15 percent decrease.
