With new buttons: This is the iPhone 16

Apple’s traditional September keynote is in full swing, and as expected, the new iPhone 16 was introduced. The focus of the presentation is the new Apple Intelligence and improvements to the camera.

Two sizes and new colors

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 16 comes in 6.1 and 6.7 inch sizes. What is new, however, are the color options: In addition to the classic black and white versions, there is now also a soft pink, blue and green.

Action Button and “Camera Control” now also in the standard model

One surprise is that the standard iPhone now also gets the Action Button, which can be used to perform custom actions. Also new is the “Camera Control” – an innovative control surface on the right side below the power button. This area, which responds to press and swipe gestures, allows easy control of the camera. Contrary to expectations, this is not a traditional “capture button”, but a sensitive area that can be used in portrait and landscape mode. A short press opens the camera app, while holding the area starts a video. Focus, zoom and other camera settings can be adjusted using swipe and press gestures. Third-party apps such as Snapchat can also access this function.

“Visual Intelligence”: Intelligent interaction with the camera

The “Camera Control” works closely with Apple Intelligence, a new function that Apple calls “Visual Intelligence”. This allows the iPhone to recognize what is in the camera image when you lightly press the control surface. For example, an object or an animal can be described automatically.
The iPhone 16’s ultra-wide-angle camera now has autofocus and improves low-light performance. Additionally, macro mode is now available on the base model. The camera lenses are now vertically aligned, allowing for the capture of “spatial photos” optimized for the Vision Pro headset.

Wind noise suppression thanks to Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence not only improves image quality, but also reduces wind noise in video recordings to ensure clearer audio.

A18 chip: Focus on efficiency and performance

The iPhone 16 is the first model to be fully developed for the use of artificial intelligence. For this reason, Apple is skipping a chip generation and introducing the new A18 chip, which is based on 3nm technology. This chip is not only up to 40 percent faster than its predecessor, but also significantly more energy efficient, as it requires 30 percent less energy for the same performance.

Apple Intelligence plays a central role here and makes the iPhone 16 one of the most advanced devices Apple has ever developed.
