/ world today news/ With the millions in agriculture led by GERB, production has shrunk by over 6% in a year – at these rates in 20 years we will have to import our bread as well
“GERB’s policy in agriculture shined at the European level – despite the millions that GERB brags about every month, the production of agricultural products in Bulgaria continues to shrink, Eurostat clearly shows.” This was stated by Momchil Nekov in connection with the recently published information on the production of agricultural goods, announced on the official page of the General Directorate of Statistics of the EU, known as Eurostat. “If these rates continue, in 20 years Bulgarian agriculture will disappear, and we will probably have to import our bread,” added the Bulgarian MEP, who is a member of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development in the European Parliament in Brussels.
According to the publication on the total production in the “Agriculture” sector, on an annual basis, the production in our country has shrunk by 6.2%. Production in the “Livestock” sector decreased by 7.2%, in the case of cereals the negative percentage was 4.6%, and in the case of agricultural services 5.3%. We are the leaders in Europe in terms of reduction in Tuesday services – a reduction of nearly 30%. “Only in three countries there is contraction in all these directions and Bulgaria is in this “shameful three” thanks to the agricultural policy led by GERB. These are the official figures published against the background of the promises of billions, reports of successful absorption and the great successes in the production of pumpkins with a growth of more than 200 times in a year”, Momchil Nekov summarized.
The share of countries smaller than Bulgaria, as a share in European agriculture, is also staggering. Hungarians, for example, produce agricultural goods for nearly 8 billion euros, and Bulgaria, which is 15% larger than Hungary in terms of area, produces twice as much – about 4 billion. Even Finland, a third of whose territory lies beyond the Arctic Circle, produces more than us.
Despite the global trends and crises, 12 EU countries recorded growth, and in Latvia it was close to 9%. Lithuania, Estonia and Slovenia also recorded growth. Among the successful countries is Greece, where the growth on an annual basis is over 3%. “Our southern neighbors clearly see the potential of the sector and are developing it. However, Bulgaria is in the top ten of the losers – it is time for a change to stop this trend in our country,” concluded Momchil Nekov.
