After not even calling him up for the cup match against SSV Ulm (4:0), Kompany relied on Goretzka from the start in the stadium at the FC Bayern Campus. The 29-year-old did not start in midfield, however, but in central defence alongside Eric Dier. In defence, the Munich team must compensate for two long-term absences in Hiroki Ito and Josip Stanisic, whose injury was announced by sporting director Max Eberl before the game.
Goretzka, who still has a contract in Munich until 2026, wants to stay despite a likely reserve role. According to media reports, those in charge now also assume that the national player will stay.
