Philadelphia. On the final play of the game, Kirk Cousins lit up the Atlanta night. The quarterback connected with wide receiver Drake London, just as the Philadelphia Eagles were looking at the clock, and scored the winning touchdown with 34 seconds left to give the Falcons a 22-21 victory in the closing game of Week 2 of the NFL.
It all came after Philadelphia offensive lineman Saquon Barkley dropped a short pass that stopped the clock with 1:46 left and forced his team to settle for a field goal instead of a first down. This left plenty of time for Cousins, especially against a defense that played soft coverage.
The 36-year-old veteran, playing in just his second game since tearing his Achilles tendon on Oct. 29 with Minnesota, overcame a shaky performance by Darnell Mooney to throw for 21 and 26 yards on consecutive plays.
Only then did Cousins find London with a short pass to the right to tie the game and Younghoe Koo gave Atlanta (1-1) the win with a 48-yard extra point after the wide receiver was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Jessie Bates III intercepted Jalen Hurts’ final pass, which sealed Atlanta’s victory and sparked a wild celebration on the sidelines.
The Eagles (1-1) took the lead on Hurts’ signature tush-push play with 6:47 left. Barkley finished with 95 yards and 22 carries in his home debut with Philadelphia, but his dropped ball gave the Falcons hope.
And that’s when Cousins began playing like the quarterback Atlanta gave a four-year, $180 million contract to.
