With “Jyn Fizz du Crann”, the insurer Mathieu Jaouen is going for gold at the Salon de

At the Lost Ar Hoat breeding farm, in Langonnet (Morbihan), we are used to medals. Thanks to the grandfather, Kimberlanda whole long line of Breton postal workers have taken to the podiums. It’s the 8e mare, out of Kimberlandwhich is selected in the national competition”, explains Mathieu Jaouen. Since 2014, eight generations of fillies have been selected in this way.

This year it is Jyn Fizz du Crann, a 3-year-old filly, who represents Morbihan in the national competition for Breton postmen. She comes fromUzar du Crannhis father, and Hyva du Crann, his mother. A very beautiful filly, around 800 to 850 kg: she will be weighed precisely this Saturday.

Double life

The Salon was greatly missed by Mathieu last year. He is delighted to find there, in the company of Jyn Fizz, the whole small world of heavy horse enthusiasts”. Unlike his father, Fernand Jaouen, a retired breeder of blond cows from Aquitaine, Mathieu, 37, is not at all a farmer, but insurer”…

Why is an insurer so passionate about breeding heavy horses? I was born in it… His father gave him the virus, so Mathieu takes on a double life: Insurer during the day, breeder in the evening. » It’s his passion. “With a lot of work on selection and genetics.

With his father, Mathieu raises fifteen to twenty Breton horses. Plus two Salers cows, on eco-grazing. Why the Breton postman? Because he is a post horse, originally ridden, elegant and fast. Lighter than all the other workhorses that flirt with 1 ton: 200 kg less is huge!

The elite of the Breton postman

The Breton postman has a large neck, his head held high. Less thick, it looks very different. It is the elite of the Breton postman…”, says Matthew. Jyn Fizz incenses, seeming to approve it. His mane is neatly braided. And his box is decorated with bunches of pink onions from Roscoff (Finistère).

Mathieu and Fernand do not make their horses work, they devote themselves solely to selection. But their horses, very famous, are sold almost everywhere, for logging, saddle or plowing”. Especially in Auvergne, where Breton postal workers are very popular. It is not a profitable breeding, but a passion: We are just looking for balance.

A job that pays, however. Have already been awarded at the Salon: Candy, in 1993; Queenin 2007 ; In men1is price in 2012, as Bruyèrein 2014 ; Dzarain 2016 ; Fyertee2e price in 2018, and Gneza3e price in 2019. In 2021, we were also selected, but there was no show…

So, in 2022, Mathieu hopes get back on the podium with Jyn Fizz, he says with a big smile. Answer Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m., with the big national competition.
