With Harting, but without a shepherd: 70 DLV athletes left for Doha

Discus Olympic champion Christoph Harting has been nominated by the German Athletics Association for the World Cup in Doha. Despite recent streaked performances, the Berliner is now in the 70-man squad, in which the heptathlon vice world champion is missing.

Harting had left his trip to Qatar open after his zero number at the German championships in early August despite fulfilling the norm – so as not to jeopardize his preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games. Most recently, the Berliner had plagued himself with back problems. At the ISTAF in Berlin in early September, he only reached the ninth and last place and had to end the competition early.

Harting, on the other hand, caused a sensation with irritating statements about the status of the DM, calling it the “last blackmail option of German athletics”. In Berlin there was a clarifying discussion with Idriss Gonschinska, DLV Director General Sport, and national discus coach Marko Badura.

Medal hopes: Mihambo and the throwers

Long jump star Malaika Mihambo (LG Kurpfalz), the strong javelin throwers around Olympic champion Thomas Röhler (Jena) and defending champion Johannes Vetter (Offenburg) as well as run ace Konstanze Klosterhalfen (Leverkusen) were already at the beginning of August for the World Cup (27 September to 6 October). Klosterhalfen is in the DLV lineup both over 1500 m and over 5000 m. Mihambo, who also cracked the World Cup norm over 100 m, will only start in the long jump.

Bauer jumps with defibrillator

Pole vaulter Katharina Bauer (Leverkusen) received an invitation from the World Association IAAF for her achievements in the indoor season. The 29-year-old had undergone heart surgery in April last year and has been jumping with an implanted defibrillator ever since.

However, the DLV also had to complain about notable losses, including ex-shot put world champions David Storl (Leipzig) and Pamela Dutkiewicz (Wattenscheid), third in the World Cup in the hurdle sprint, who had already broken off the season due to injuries. Triple jumper Kristin Gierisch (Chemnitz) also has to do without a start in Doha, the European Championship second suffers from foot problems. On Wednesday, heptathlon vice world champion Carolin Schäfer (Frankfurt) was injured as well as triple jumper Neele Eckhardt (Göttingen), who suffers from pneumonia. Since high jumper Christina Honsel (Dortmund) was subsequently given a World Cup place on the list of the World Association IAAF, the DLV squad comprises 70 athletes.
