With everything and a pandemic, 20 thousand mammograms were performed in Guanajuato

The pandemic has not stopped health services in Guanajuato. And one example is the awareness and services that the Guanajuato Health Secretariat (SSG) provides to the population about breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the second most common neoplasm in the world population (only behind lung cancer) and the most common among women.

The SSG reported that this year, despite the pandemic, more than 20,000 mammograms were performed on Guanajuato citizens and 70,000 clinical breast self-examinations.

The state agency currently has 17 digital mastgraphers in different public hospitals in the 46 municipalities, making this service available to the population.

The head of the SSG, Daniel Díaz Martínez, announced that the average age of presentation of breast cancer cases is 54.9 years, the highest incidence in the number of cases is registered in the group of 50 to 59 years with 45 percent of all cases.

A LATENT ENEMY

Breast cancer is the second most common neoplasm in the world population (only behind lung cancer) and the most common among women.

The international mortality trend is upward, due to a higher incidence of the disease due to:

  • Increased life expectancy at birth.
  • Lifestyle changes.
  • The relationship between cancer and obesity.

Awareness of the general public about breast cancer, as well as the promotion of appropriate policies and programs, are fundamental strategies for population control of breast cancer.

CONSTANT SUPERVISION

Cancer control encompasses prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care.

Dr. Daniel Díaz pointed out that it is important for women to approach their health services for a timely detection, especially after 25 years of age.

Also, be aware of the following changes in the breasts:
  • Swelling of the breast or part of it.
  • Skin irritation or pitting.
  • Breast pain
  • Nipple pain or nipple inversion.
  • Redness, scaling, or thickening of the nipple or skin of the breast.
  • A discharge from the nipple other than milk.
  • A lump in the armpits.

These changes can also be signs of less serious, non-cancerous conditions, such as an infection or a cyst.

It is important that a doctor immediately check any changes in the breasts, in this way, it can be prevented or detected in time, and adequate treatment will be provided.
